ANR Private Well Searchable Database

Did you know that Vermont’s licensed well drillers have been required to submit well completion reports to the state since 1966? If you’re not quite sure where a private well is located on a property, there’s a good chance you could find the well’s location using the Agency of Natural Resources searchable database. Here’s how to get started:

Do you know your Well Tag # (found on a metal tag on the well head)? If so, go to:
https://anrweb.vt.gov/DEC/WellDrillerReports/Default.aspx and do a simple search.
If you’re certain of the location…this may also be a good site to use.

If you don’t have a well tag # or aren’t certain of the address, go to:
https://anrmaps.vermont.gov/websites/anra5/

  • Hover over the ANR icon, when the map comes up…put in the address of the well and hit enter.
  • When the 911 &/or Bing appear on the left, click on one of them, then click on the address when it comes up.
    • The map will zoom into that address.
  • On the bottom of the page, to the left of the map is a “Layers” tab, select that and go down to “Drinking Water & Ground Water Protection” Select the +
  • Check “Private Wells”
    • It may take a moment, but the site will populate with Well Tag numbers. Select the dot next to the tag # …
    • These tag numbers may not appear where you expect to see the well. Not all data was entered correctly. Sometimes, it’s not there at all.
  • A Dialogue Box appears and you have to option to Improve this Well, Report a Missing Well, or Generate a Well Report.
    • If you believe you’ve located the correct well select “Generate Well Report”
      • You’ll find information including, but not limited to when the well was drilled, who drilled it, and how deep it is.
      • If you don’t find the well you’re looking for, you can “Report a Missing Well” by selecting the tag closest to where you expect to find the well
      • Fill out the survey
  • To improve the information shown in the well report:
    • Select “Improve this Well” and fill in the survey…at the bottom there is an area for you to further explain that the well is located at one address and it was reported at the mailing address.
