A Realtor® is a licensed real estate salesperson who belongs to the National Association of Realtors®, the largest trade group in the nation. REALTORS are held to a higher ethical standard than licensed agents and must adhere to a Code of Ethics.

Whether you’re a new agent seeking support in all things real estate, an experienced broker searching for the answer to a client’s question, or somewhere in between, as a member of the National Association of Realtors®, you have access to a wide array of resources designed to help you succeed in today’s market.
How to become a Realtor® Member
- First, you must obtain a real estate license. Learn more about becoming a licensee here.
- Next, become affiliated with a brokerage. Talk to your broker about the local board or association of Realtors® they are affiliated with in the state.
- Join your local board or association of Realtors®. You can find a listing of Vermont’s local boards here.
Membership in your local board/association of Realtors® automatically extends your membership to the state and national associations. Your membership makes you part of one of the most powerful trade associations in the world! - Complete the Code of Ethics training withing 90 days of your local board application date. Code of Ethics training can be taken in a classroom, or online. Many local boards offer Code of Ethics training. For a list of VAR classes, visit our education pages here. - Complete New Member Orientation online here. Orientation must be completed within 90 days of your local board application date.
- Complete 8 hours of post-licensure education approved by the Vermont Real Estate Commission. Visit the VAR education calendar here to find classes.
