Vermont Realtors® is committed to advancing legislation that supports the real estate industry in Vermont. In addition to VR’s work on key issues, the association is working to actively promote the election of candidates who understand the vital role real estate plays in our economy. This year, VR developed a candidate selection committee to help the association create an objective non-partisan approach to selecting and supporting political candidates who will support issues important to our industry.
Earlier this month, the candidate selection committee participated in the Best Practices for Choosing Realtor® Champions course. “This course helps our members refine the process for choosing candidates to support in local and state elections,” according to Matt Musgrave, VR Government Affairs Director. The course also covers the importance of grassroots campaigns, member mobilization, and how to actively help candidates gain the support they need.
What’s Next
The VR Candidate Selection Committee will work on the following:
- Create and distribute a candidate questionnaire
- Use the responses to the questionnaire to decide which candidates VR will support financially
- Invite candidates for governor, Lt. governor and attorney general to participated in an interview with the committee
- Submit recommendations for candidates to the VR Government Affairs Committee, Trustees and the VR Board of Directors for approval
- Provide campaign contributions and endorsements to approved candidates
