Rental Assistance Resources

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has extended evictions moratoriums to October 3, 2021. The eviction ban only covers counties with 50 or more new cases per 100,000 people in a seven-day period.

Eviction proceedings can proceed in counties not covered by the new moratorium. Tenants must apply for rental assistance in order to be protected from eviction. The moratorium only applies to evictions resulting in nonpayment of rent.

NAR Adovcating for Nationwide Rental Assistance

NAR has always maintained that the best solution for all parties was rental assistance to cover the rent, taxes, and utility bills for tenants struggling during the pandemic. This prevents two crises—one for tenants, and one for mom-and-pop housing providers who do not have a reprieve from their bills.

NAR is currently assessing the new order and its impact on small housing providers. Given the pending litigation brought by the Alabama and Georgia Association REALTORS® and supported by NAR, all legal avenues are still being assessed as the association reviews the details of the new order. As this is a new order, the Supreme Court will not consider action until relief at the lower courts has been sought and exhausted.

NAR will continue to push the Administration and Congress to deploy nationwide rental assistance, covering up to a year-and-a-half of back and future payments for renters across the country who are struggling to gain access to those funds.

Vermont Emergency Rental Assistance Program

The Vermont Emergency Rental Assistance Program (VERAP) works to alleviate income pressure on tenants and landlords and to restore stability to the rental community. The program offers relief to landlords on behalf of renters and tenants experiencing financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic through a 2nd round of federal funding for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP).

VERAP will be accepting applications for rental assistance through December 31, 2021 or until funds are depleted. Additionally, the federal government may extend funding for VERAP through September 30, 2022 if funding is available.
